Tamil language experts are still puzzled about the origins of the Tamil language. Even though it has been dated back to at least the 1st century CE, Tamil does not have an exact location where its roots are found. There are various theories about how Tamil came to be written, but they all agree that it is one of the Dravidian languages that split off from Proto-Dravidian around three millennia ago. The oldest known corpus of texts in Tamil is part one of "Mutur Aruluthe" by Nakkirar who lived during 300-400 CE. There are no current studies that can show direct connections between Sanskrit and Tamil languages. While it is generally accepted that languages like Sanskrit and Prakrit had an influence on the development of the Tamil language, there has not been enough to prove either way whether or not Tamil can be directly related to Sanskrit. There are some linguistic similarities between these two languages because of the influence they both had on each other over time, but not enough to show a direct relationship.Tamil language is an older language than other Indian languages like Hindi, Gujarati or Punjabi. These modern Indian languages that are spoken today originated in medieval times after Sanskrit evolved into various Prakrits. However, Tamil undoubtedly belonged to the early Dravidian family of languages. Tamil was likely used as a language of trade and commerce as early as 1500 BC. It is also speculated that Tamil is an offshoot or sister of Dravidian languages like Telugu and Kannada. Some argue that it is related to Sanskrit, but they lack evidence to back up their claims.The ancient Tamil texts were written in ancient Brahmi scripts but were later changed by the hands of Kannada and Telugu scribes who added letters and syllables from those other languages making them even more complex. Tamil language was originally written in the Brahmi script, along with other Dravidian languages used in South India. The earliest known records of Tamil are found in the "Silappatikaram" text by Ilango Adigal. Ilango was a classical Tamil poet who lived between the 5th century and 6th century CE. The oldest text that has been found is part of the "Mutur Aruluthe". Nakkirar is believed to have lived between 300 and 400 CE and it contains a treatise on astronomy and astrology. This text is one of least than 500 texts that contain information about astrology and astronomy in Tamil language. One of the most important aspects of this text is that it provides a theory about planetary positions and concepts such as the zodiac. Some of the other texts include "Soundarya Lahari" by Adi Shankara, "Puranaanooru" and "Purananuru". Tamil has several dialects, including Palayamkottai, Pasumpon and Madras. The different dialects were developed based on where people lived and what they spoke in daily lives. According to one study, Tamil developed through an evolutionary process from its preceding language Proto-Dravidian.
